BULBOUS - Yacht 485. We recently received a report from a builder in Russia who asked us to design a bulbous bow for his TY485. The bulbous bow is now completed, fitted and has undergone sea trials. The owner reports that the trawler now has improved fuel efficiency and also offers a smoother action in heavy seas. I actually built 2 x TOM THUMB 26’s in Australia back in the 80's. One for Jorge Gallegos of Balmain NSW. You provided the plans for that as I saw the packaging in the days before downloads. And another guy who was an ex priest, Peter ? who bought a large hard chine design of yours without a survey. I put him in touch with you and started him towards the TOM THUMB 26 as something that matched his revised budget. I was the helicopter pilot in PNG who built steel boats on his time off. We communicate a few times but I'm sure you have thousands of ex builders. Anyway this is going to be my own retirement boat.

CUSTOM DESIGNS: Firstly, let me explain that almost every one of the designs shown on our web site started life as someone’s custom design costing the original client between €5,000 and €50,000.  

As you can see from the above that our ex-custom designs which are now stock plans and patterns or cutting files do represent great value as they are offered at a fraction of the original cost. The interiors can often be rearranged to satisfy the requirements of a client and family at a fraction of the cost of a new custom design. However, the fact we have been kept busy creating new custom designs for over 40 years illustrates the point that our costing for a new design is relatively inexpensive compared to similar services offered be our competitors.

What is the cost of a custom design?”  If you can live with the exterior of an existing design then that is the way to go ... otherwise our pricing for custom designs is still RELATIVELY inexpensive considering the overall cost of the entire building project.
