Recent email for Spray 460 builder in RUSSIA.

We now have an excellent set of construction photos plus many photos of completed Sprays that are available with the STUDY PLAN PACKAGES.

Bruce HELLO!  I finished the assembly of the boat! I worked from January 2 to February 20, 5 days a week, 3 people.  Your project is excellent!   No errors!  All Russian sailors looked for the building!  Thank you for your project. Andrey

STEEL OR ALUMINUM PLANS & CUTTING FILES....BIGGER, BETTER  offshore cruising pilot house sail boat. The Spray 460 is longer plus the beam has been increased to maintain the proportional beam of the other proven Spray designs, this greatly increases the livable interior space and allows wider side decks. This boat sails more upright as is the case with the other Spray designs which rarely exceed 10 degrees of heel ... you family will love this feature.

This Wood/Epoxy ROBERTS 470 was built in Turkey and is currently operating as a charter boat in that area.  The operation has been sufficiently successful to enable a second vessel to be ordered from the same builders.

The Roberts safety skeg is designed to take the best features from the LONG FIN / SKEG combination and add a SAFETY FACTOR. Many of you may be aware that skegs in general are vulnerable to damage so here is our answer to this problem.

Bernie Loyer - Voyager 495 getting close to completion.

Bernie sent me this photo -  My 495 Voyager 'Pinguino' is currently in the Puerto Lucia Yacht Club in Salinas, Ecuador. She sails like a freight train and turns heads at the same time. Everyone into boating and sailing in the northern half of the country (Chile) knows of "Pinguino".  She cuts an impressive figure and when she first crossed the bar, it was an awesome event for me and a whole bunch of friends that have been involved.

Best Regards, Bernie Loyer

FROM: Voyager 495 builder in Australia.

Message from Rick :   Bruce - some idea of how the Voyager 495  sails - I'm extremely pleased with the performance. I've been through the 55 kt thing in the open sea as well as 60 kts from a cyclone in Mackay Harbour. I've bumped this and that ... but she's as tough as nails, and very comfortable to live aboard. We are in Newcastle at the moment and hope to be in Sydney for the start of Sydney to Hobart and New Years. We'll then head back to the warmer climate early next year (we have a trip back to Bundaberg before Xmas, yet) ! Gotta go

.

Hello Bruce! Over a year later, and we're still floating.....amazing. Approaching 10,000nm - West Coast of North America to Mexico, Marquesas, Tuamotu's, Tahiti, Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, Bora Bora, Palmerston, Beverage Reef, Nuie, Tonga, and just awaiting friend's arrival before jumping south to New Zealand for the cyclone season. Boat has been superb - easy motion, easy handling, good boat speed - the hull is great.

Our steel construction also had us leading our boat buddies in whenever the way became challenging - the confidence it provides allows us to get get into beautiful anchorages.

Attached a couple sailing pics from recent Bluewater festival in Vava'u - and a nice offshore shot taken from another boat we were passing enroute Manihi to Tahiti. Genoa is furled due to furler issues.....so easily driven we still made good speed . Always get complements on her pretty hull.

The Arab Emirates Navy have built two Voyager 495's from our cutting files and plans - the boats are for the Navy Training Department - Many other governments around the world have built boats to our design including Drug Enforcement and fast patrol boats as well as several sail training vessels.

FROM THIS

TO THIS - IN JUST A FEW MONTHS !

Aluminum Voyager 495 built in The Czech Republic from our ALUMINUM PLANS & CUTTING FILES. The basic shell of an aluminum boat costs about twice the price of steel! This is our updated version and is one pretty boat !

JANUARY 2011 - Voyager 495 - Reply from builder in Australia when I asked how his boatbuilding project was going ! No more boatbuilding !!!  All sailing now … I’ve clocked up over 3,000 nm in Epicurus now and the yacht has performed just great… I’ll attach some photos later Paul Grainger !

The Roberts 532 is the FIBERGLASS version. The Voyager 542 is the STEEL STEEL OR ALUMINUM PLANS & CUTTING FILES version.

The previous and very successful Roberts 53 with over 600 of this design having already been built in fiberglass & steel. This one great cruising boat & a proven charter boat should you want to earn your living whilst sailing the oceans of the world. The Roberts 53 is now replaced by the new designs outlined above.

Above is shown three different accommodation layouts that will work well with the FIBERGLASS Roberts 532.

Roberts 53 (R532)  "Pelican"

Bruce,  I have a Roberts 532, which has been very well built, of GRP in 1985. I bought it in 1995.  We have sailed around most of the coast of Australia and in a couple of long distance races. The 11 day race from Fremantle to Indonesia gave us line honours as well as a handicap trophy.

We recently got back to Australia from a trip through Tonga, Fiji and Vanuatu. I am very pleased with her design, building and performance as a cruising ketch.

We have been accepted as an entrant in this years Sydney Hobart Race, cruising section. Regards Gil Waller.

Dear Mr. Roberts – Goodson, I am the current owner of a steel hulled Roberts 53 ( Now R532 ) ketch.  It was built in 1985 by a commercial fisherman for commercial salmon and albacore trolling and thus it has a fish hold where there would typically be cabin space.

I have owned this boat for five years and I use it for commercial salmon trolling in Alaska.  I have owned and worked on dozens of different boats and this Roberts 53 is my favourite of them all.  I hope to continue making a living on this boat for as long as I am healthy enough to do it.  This is more than a job to me, it is a life that I love.

Sincerely, Frank Murray owner/operator of f/v AKVAVIT

VOYAGER 542 'WesternGrace' built in Canada & operated as a very successful charter boat.

Joanne & John Van Strien  SV Western Grace:

Another year has gone by. Western Grace is now on here 4th voyage down South and we have now 43000 NM ( In 3.5 years) under the keel. Needles to say we are now even more confident about her than ever.

As we run a charter operation we are very much on a schedule and this means we need a all weather vessel what can take some punishment. The 532 is certainly the vessel for the job. By all standards we are a very heavy vessel but very comfortable. This spring on the passage from Hawaii to Victoria we encountered a full Gale of 55 Kts for about 24 hrs. Behind the low a secondary low formed, a small weather bomb.

Around noon the barometer was at 1008 MB and be 2300 hrs 985. (45 KTS) Within 30 minutes down to 980 MB and winds of 75 KTS. Needles to say a bit of a ride but we all did stay dry and warm in the pilot house. By daylight seas where about 33' and breaking over the deck. A few grandaddies shook us up as we where a few time clobbered and had tons of water over the decks.

We sustained some damage as the dodger blew to pieces and the stay sail ripped to shreds due to the traveller car ripping of the track. This was all equipment failure but the vessel it self came through with flying colors. On our return in Canada we learned that a older fiberglass sailing vessel who was within 20 miles of us during the worst of it suffered hull damage (tin canned) hull.

So if anyone who is  considering serious offshore sailing we feel a moderate displacement steel vessel is the only way to go this combinaton will result in a strong, safe and magnificent good looking vessel. Top quality metal vessels retain there value as well. By the way when we departed Sidney (Vancouver Island) we went to see the new trawler Tim is constructing from one of your STEEL OR ALUMINUM PLANS & CUTTING FILES. Everything seems to be fitting well and the time savings are significant. Building from a STEEL OR ALUMINUM PLANS & CUTTING FILES is the only way to go. Till next time,   Joanne & John Van Strien  SV Western Grace

SEE EARLIER REPORTS FROM WESTERN GRACE ABOVE.

I reviewed the web page showing some of the details of SV WESTERN GRACE. (Voyager 542) I recently chartered a cabin on this vessel while in Alaska. The boat is absolutely divine! The design is awesome and the performance is superior. Under sail in a mild breeze (20kts or so) we made 6 kts going wing and wing. I sailed the boat and she handles like a dream. Western Grace is truly a showpiece of a vessel & Christensen Yachts LTD Canada did a top notch job in building her. Sincerely Randy Murrah Joshua, TX

FROM A V542 BUILDER IN SWEDEN:

Hi Bruce,  It has now gone 8 months since I started building our boat and everything goes as planned so far. My goal is that I should finish painting the boat in Aug-Sept. We are very satisfied with the construction of the STEEL OR ALUMINUM PLANS & CUTTING FILES, everything fits perfect.

R. CZAZARNEKI WRITES: If you are dreaming about having a sail or power boat.... - If you are like me, you want to have a big boat but can't afford to buy one, talk to Bruce Roberts. The STEEL OR ALUMINUM PLANS & CUTTING FILES that I have purchased is primed on both sides with "Sigma weld" paint and extremely well cut.

The pieces fit like a puzzle with the occasional help from the sledgehammer. Do not be tempted to save money by trying to cut it yourself. My feeling is that you will end up spending much more money and time and you will not get the same results. Go with the STEEL OR ALUMINUM PLANS & CUTTING FILES!! This is just a friendly advice based on my own experience; nobody is paying me for saying this.  R. CZAZARNEKI
