Hi Bruce, Thanks for the quick reply. I enclose pictures of my Spray and some editorial that the local paper ran after I brought her back from Copenhagen earlier this year.
Hi Bruce, we just sold (a bitter-sweet moment) our Bruce
Roberts designed Spray 40 in a slightly modified Spray 42' (LOD) that was
built by a South-African German naval engineer O.L. Silvester in the mid
70s and launched in 1984 (see picture attached). Heritage was
built using the C-Flex method, and I must say, even in tough weather, we
never so much as experienced a shudder from her. We absolutely love the design, especially the
hull shape, and very stable sailing properties, but sold her mainly
because we are looking to up-size to accommodate a family of 4.
We really like the Spray 40 design and looks,
and are wondering if it is possible to duplicate our former Spray 42,
which was based on your boat plans, into an appropriately proportioned Spray 50
or 52 (LOD) while still retaining the same forward hull shape (see
picture), without diminishing her overall characteristics. Michael Klautky

There are over 4,000 Bruce Roberts Spray's
already sailing
worldwide plus another 1000 currently being built. We have been willing to listen to every combination of idea's about this
wonderful boat and several layouts have been drawn.
Many of these features are
interchangeable between the various versions. You can choose to build this design in multi
chine steel or aluminum. Many of these Sprays have completed complete
circumnavigations some more than once &
usually with crews consisting only of two persons !

ROUND BILGE WOOD/EPOXY
BOAT PLANS & FULL SIZE PATTERNS
SPRAY Built by Rod & Dee Palanca
Hi Bruce,
Yes we finally got her ready for sea. We took her out last
Saturday. In about 7-9 knot winds, we were making 3.7 to
4 knots close hauled and 4.5 knots running downwind wing and wing.
What really made me happy was that once the sails were trimmed to
her course, she steered herself, keeping within 5 degrees of a base
course. I sat there for 15 minutes and never had to touch the
wheel. She heels just enough to let you know the sails are drawing but otherwise sat very upright and steady, no hobby horsing in the waves and riding the swells very well. We are looking forward to heading north from Newport, OR up to the Anacortes, WA area early next month. Let me if there is anything else you would like to know about "Icanaho."
Using the Bruce Roberts building methods these wood epoxy hulls are quick and easy to build using average handman skills.

ROUND BILGE ALUMINUM, RB STEEL or WOOD/EPOXY BOAT PLANS & FULL SIZE PATTERNS
Centennial SPRAY 45 We ordered preliminary boat plans for
the Spray from Bruce and started adapting our layout to the 45 foot hull.
When Bruce released his round bilge version, the we were convinced this was
the perfect hull for us. The hull characteristics were a major for our
layout without compromising the sailing characteristics. We sent our deck and cabin
layout to Bruce and contracted with him to do a set of drawings using them.
A wonderful thing happened when working with Bruce. We had originally drawn the deck
with a doghouse over the companionway. He, faithfully, had a doghouse in the
drawings that he did for us, but he also made a slightly different version
of the cabin which used a pilothouse with a steering station on a platform
on the starboard side. He sent this alternate design to us as a gift.
We so much like the idea of the open
pilothouse creating a bright open space out of the saloon and galley that we
adopted it. We were able to take the general
concept and implement it in the final design.
Regards Ben Smith.

lay-out .. these are all in the study boat plans on DOWNLOAD
"Bruce, I and two Estonian master mariners
motored Mother of Perl to Vastervik, Sweden for sails and rigging and sailed her back to
Tallinn in the end of October. A truly great hull in every respect. We also barely touched
the steering and this was going straight downwind under sail. With a little
experience, I know that I could balance this boat on any point of sail. Fantastic! I'll
let you know more about our adventures with Mother of Perl as we travel this next few
years on both sides of the Atlantic and hopefully Pacific.... Regards Ben Smith"

Morning Bruce My name is Gary. I had ordered two sets of boat plans for the Spray, one in fiberglass, one in steel from you. I followed your recommendation and went over to Sweden and arranged with Sven to build the Spray in tribute to my wife who had passed away, There was a big write up in Sweden and the U, K. about the "Nancy Ann."
She's getting quite well known. We stopped at the Azores and this whole family came running over to the "Nancy Ann" They had pictures of her and had also heard about me. Am sending pictures of "Nancy Ann" and my last discussion with Sven. I feel that you should be kept well informed of the history of the "Nancy Ann" as she's designed by you. Am hoping that your enjoying your trip, your pictures will be waiting for you when you return to the U.S. Respectfully, Captain Gary. L. Olson
