These trawlers are designed in accordance with Lloyds  for category 1 (unrestricted operating / sailing area), which is much better than the EU and other Classification Societies and the  CE-A require. Complete stability calculations to USCG offshore requirements are included in the design package. All calculations are also cross referenced against ABS requirements to ensure that the design meets world-wide standards and specifications.

NEW TY 585
This new design was conceived because a client wanted a larger version of the TY 485 to be built in wood epoxy.

For those whose cruising area requires a shallow draft vessel, and then it is possible to reduce the draft to 4 ft – 1.22 m by using twin tunnels.

If you prefer an ‘performance trawler’ that is one that can achieve say speeds in excess of 20 knots then again this is possible but the preferred building material in that case should be either aluminum or fiberglass.

As you can see this new design offers a wealth of possibilities as a long range serious cruising trawler and some versions will be suitable for the addition of sail assist to make extended passages possible while saving fuel under favourable conditions.

From owner of TY 620 "MY BLUE STEEL"

I think the TY620 design is great! Trawler Yacht "MY BLUE STEEL", registered in the UK, departed 1800hours on December 28th, 2009 from Mokpo, Korea. I think the

From the builder:

This was the start of her 2,600 nm trip to the Singapore, with stops planned in the Philippines and Kota Kinabalu, although the boat had sufficient range to complete the trip non-stop. The Owner is very satisfied with the interior and sea trials; max speed  about 12.7 knots with twin 235HP John Deere at 2000 rpm and 7.0~7.5 knots with one engine at 2000rpm. Onboard were Mr. Rod Steel as the Owner/Skipper, his partner Angie Sach, Mr. John Holbrook and Mr. Alistair Dow. “MY Blue Steel” arrived in Singapore, where she will be based, on 14th January 2010 and is available for viewing there by prior arrangement.

I am proud to build Bruce Roberts designs, which I am very impressed with, and thank you for your assistance in marketing GHI Yachts Korea.

As you know, we have built to your design (1) Trawler Yacht 43 (2) Trawler 620 (3) Voyager 495 and (4) three Voyager 388 ( first one to be completed and launched on January 30, 2010). PHOTOS of V388 to be sent on January 2010.

Hi Bruce,  Sea Crest Marine in Bangkok were excellent to deal with. When we left Bangkok we had a sharp 2 metre wave right on the bow for the first 36 hours, quite the opposite from the big following seas that we experienced bringing Rod Steel’s Trawler Yacht 620 down from Korea. The TY520 handled the waves very well indeed. We had a problem with the Auto Pilot hydraulics and had to hand steer for the whole 36 hours so we would have known if the boat was not performing ! Towards the end of the 36 hours as we closed in on the Malaysia / Thai border the seas swung around about 30 degrees from head on and we were still handling things pretty well. No doubt the boat would be improved with Stabilizers but we always felt safe.

We have power steering and the boat really responds well. I am very happy with the way it manoeuvres. Stats wise we have….Single John Deere 267 Hp and we were cruising at 7+ knots using around 15 litres an hour at 1500 rpm. Very economical. Twin Disc Gearbox and 4 blade prop, Onan 17.5 KVA Gen set, 8000 litres of Fuel giving us arrange of around 3000 miles, Yanmar 40Hp for hydraulics. We have stern and bow thrusters and Lewmar windlass all hydraulic, Raymarine Radar and electronics, 2000 litres fresh water, Coltri Sub Dive compressor,

Happy to share any information with prospective builders and also any advice regarding where to build and with whom in South East Asia. I have attached some pictures of the Sea Crest Pilot House and Engine room. They did an excellent job. We arrived in Singapore just as they were having their National Day celebrations so we got some good pictures! Very Happy to be back in Singapore and Very Happy with the boat Bruce.   Regards Al Dow

SHAKE-DOWN CRUISE.

Hi guys !
Last week we arrived from  a "shake - down " cruise , non-stop, in full sea conditions of 605 miles .....  we had a good weather window and the voyage went by without incidents . Our average cruise speed was 8,7 knots but don't have the fuel consumption as yet ( think will be close to 21 lts/hr)  Unfortunately none of the three of us had any experience with trawlers to have a good judgement on her motion but it seem pretty good to me.
As I gain more experience and improve my judgment on the boat I will pass it on to you . best regards Caio

From TY 620 builder :
Hi,  By the way, the TY 620 - 62 foot trawler yacht of Bruce's design that we are currently building is coming along very well.  Just received the drawings ( for TY 620 ) and we are impressed by the amount of detail on these.  We have made copies and have our guys studying them. We find these help the guys on the floor to understand the assembly process and things go much quicker. The quality of the kit parts are the best we have ever seen, and as a result, we are saving time in the build. At present, we have 9 welders/fitters working on the boat in three teams.  We have almost all of the plate hung in place and tacked up.  We anticipate the seam welding will start within a few weeks as there are some details to attend to. But we must say again, that we are very happy with the kit quality.   Brian
From another TY 620 builder:
Hi Bruce,  Well we're coming along fine with our project. I'm amazed at how straight forward has been. We are having a lot of fun. My employees are anxious to come to work each day as they enjoy the progress as much as I.  Thanks for your help,  Lee

Lee Simpson's comments to others
"As we worked, more and more respect came to Bruce Roberts for his designs. Things that made no sense came to understanding as we flowed through the process"

Lee Simpson who is building a TY 620 B from our kit writes :

Hi Bruce, Sorry for not writing sooner. We are really enjoying the project. I have a friend that comes to work on the boat in the evening just for the relaxation. We are almost finished welding the hull. We will build the house and pilothouse on a gig on the ground.

I must remove for transport and feel there are benefits to building on the ground. I will lift into place before moving to make sure everything fits.  We are making some changes from the original layout to better fit my needs. We've traded the amidships stateroom for a good sized head, pantry and shop/mechanical room. I will install all plumbing, electrical, day-tank, fuel management and heating in this room.

I've moved the engine in place and plan to build a box similar to a sound shield on a generator around the main engine. Quiet is important to me. All tanks are in place. I plan a transom door to the lazarette from the swim step, through the engine room and into the mechanical room.  hope to get my office gal to add more photos soon. Regards,  Lee

Bruce,  I had reply from RYA on plan evaluations. They have been very quick and say they have no concerns about suitability for RDOWNLOAD or on CD - YOU CHOOSE DOWNLOAD OR CD. . .
design Category A. Nice compliment on the quality of your plan information. Everything seems to be OK. They used Naval Architecture Services LTD  in Hampshire. LR SSC service group G6 (unrestricted yacht) .

Hi   Well, the day finally arrived, the kit is here and on our shop floor. The steel looks great, we are starting to sort it into piles of the frames and associated pieces.  I think the guys in Holland did an excellent job of cutting as the edges of the plates are very clean and sharp with almost no bevel.  This last point is important, as we find with plasma cut kits, if there is any bevel on the edges it tends to add up and compound errors where multiple parts fit together.  So, we are anticipating no problems at this stage. Hope you enjoyed the pictures Bruce (our Bruce) sent you, we will send more as we start assembling the kit.  We actually made good progress on Friday and managed to build most of the building frames as well as all of the jigs.  We are altering the building frame a bit to allow us to set the jigs on the floor as we are limited in height.  As it is we will have to build the mast in a way that it can be bolted on after the boat is out of the building. Yes, everything looks fine and we are sure the kit will assemble fast. Sincerely,  Brian

Hi Hal,  We have bounced back and forth between DC and Hydraulic thruster' s and have finally decided on hydraulic mainly because we would need a 48 Volt thruster and that meant 12v, 24v, & 48v DC and we just think we would rather have one dc voltage (12V). We had sized the generator for hydraulic anyway so it just makes sense.

We think we will use two 2500 watt inverters and split the loads again to stay with 12 volts DC only. I want to thank you for working so closely through the construction. He will be complete with the mechanical and exterior
within a month and my wife and I will retire in April and work on the interior full time. I am anticipating that work to take 3 to 4 months which is longer than it took to do all the rest. Janet and I are very impressed with your design and would highly recommend both of you to anyone who asks.

We will continue to send pictures and updates as we begin our part of the project.
Thanks again.  Ralph E. Elliott III (Butch)
